Melinda Hurt has been a physical therapist for over a decade and a business co-owner for several years. As she considered her future, she wanted something more and decided it was time to start out on her own. Melinda knew she’d need help navigating the complexities of transitioning away from her partnership and support bringing her new vision to life. At the recommendation of a friend and fellow business owner, she reached out to the Maine Small Business Development Center (SBDC).
Melinda began working with Maine SBDC at USM Business Advisor Anne Lancaster. Anne spent over a year guiding Melinda through the transition. Together they worked to set up her new LLC, drafted a comprehensive business plan, and worked to create realistic financial projections. With Anne’s assistance, Melinda was equipped to confidently launch her business.
Melinda comments, “Without Anne, I would probably still be thinking “can I really do this?” Anne listened to what I was saying and believed in me. She helped me analyze the data, so that my decisions were based on objective measures vs. subjective feelings. She has been a constant support and I will continue to work with Anne as I move the business forward.”
Melinda opened the doors to her new venture, Hurt & Co, at a new location in Scarborough in early 2024. Hurt & Co is a wellness center that houses the top healthcare practitioners and fitness instructors to provide the community with an interdisciplinary team approach to health. They offer direct-care physical therapy, pelvic floor physical therapy, personal training, an open gym, fitness classes, infrared sauna, and massage.
Notably, Melinda’s dedication to providing top-tier healthcare services without the constraints of insurance companies has resonated with her community. Looking ahead, Melinda is optimistic about the future of Hurt & Co, envisioning a vibrant community centered around health, wellness, and active living.
As Hurt & Co prepares for an open house event on May 17th, Melinda invites the community to experience firsthand the transformative impact of their interdisciplinary approach to wellness.
