Mandy’s Paw-sitive Strides is a dog-walking business owned and operated by Mandy Lyman, a dedicated animal lover in Patton, Maine. Mandy provides 30-minute walks for dogs, ensuring they receive exercise and care while their owners are busy. Fully licensed and insured, Mandy has also participated in dog obedience classes to deliver top-notch service.
Mandy came to the Maine SBDC in April 2023 with a dream of starting her own dog-walking business. Mandy wanted to contribute to her community and earn her own income. Her initial goal was to attract 3 to 4 regular clients and work 4 to 6 hours weekly, but she needed guidance and resources to make it a reality.
With the help of Business Advisor Dan Umphrey and her vocational rehabilitation (VR) team, Mandy received comprehensive support to launch her business. Together, they developed a detailed business plan, secured business insurance, and established best practices for client contracting. They also assisted Mandy in accessing grant resources, purchasing equipment and supplies, and navigating how her business would impact her income and benefits. The team prepared Mandy for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program to help her purchase equipment for operating year-round, including during Maine’s challenging winters.
Mandy successfully launched her business, building a loyal client base and gaining recognition for her dedication and hard work. In the fall of 2024, Mandy was honored at the Maine Association of People Supporting Employment for All (APSE) Conference in Bangor. A video production showcasing her journey and achievements was featured at the event.
Today, Mandy continues to operate her business with great success. She regularly meets with her team, including her SBDC Advisor, to refine operations and explore new growth opportunities. Mandy’s vibrant personality, positive attitude, and unwavering determination have inspired everyone who has worked with her. She is a shining example of how individuals can achieve their entrepreneurial dreams with the right support.
As Mandy puts it: “If you have a dream, chase it. If you stick to it and you’re persistent, your dreams can become a reality.”
