Mike Brown envisioned creating a welcoming space where the community could find high-quality, locally sourced food. That vision became China Lake Provisions, a deli, pizza, and sub shop offering a variety of healthy foods and local goods.
When Mike and his team first set out to open their business, they faced a major hurdle: securing financing. Unsure where to start, they turned to the Maine SBDC after a recommendation from their local chamber of commerce.
With the help of Business Advisor Christina Dodge, Mike navigated the challenges of writing a business plan, creating cash flow projections, and securing funding.
“Christina not only helped us navigate through all the required paperwork and compile financial data,” Mike said. “She shared her knowledge and experience with other issues that she has seen.”
Mike opened months ahead of schedule, launching in December instead of summer. Sales quickly doubled the store’s original summer projections in the first month.
China Lake Provisions has become a popular stop for locals and visitors. They offer everything from fresh sandwiches to hand-crafted ice cream. This includes selections from Maine Coast Creamery, a fellow Maine SBDC client.
Their grand opening on February 16th coincides with the China Lake Ice Fishing Derby. Looking ahead with confidence, the strong start reaffirms his belief in business, community, and local partnerships.
