Originally from Haiti, Ismael Thadal immigrated to Maine in 2007. He met Molly Hodgkins, a Maine native, in 2014, and they bonded over their shared love of ice cream. Ismael and Molly began making ice cream at home, working on perfecting their unique recipes with the help of friends, family, and community members who served as eager taste testers. To deepen his knowledge, Ismael took an Ice Cream 101 course at Penn State, which helped him understand the complexities of manufacturing high-quality ice cream.
Knowing they created something special, they began to consider starting their own business. They had heard positive things about the Maine SBDC from other business owners and decided to reach out for support early in their entrepreneurial journey. They began working with Maine SBDC at CEI Business Advisor Chris Dodge.
Chris assisted Ismael and Molly as they developed a comprehensive business plan and financial projections. She guided them through the complex process of getting their dairy processing facility licensed and connected them with a banker for a business loan. Additionally, they applied for a grant with the Central Maine Growth Council. They also consulted with Maine SBDC Business Advisor Eric Treworgy, who has extensive experience in the ice cream industry. He shared valuable “industry trade secrets” that helped them navigate the competitive landscape.
Molly comments, “Our work with Christina has not just “helped” our business – it made it possible for us to bring our business to fruition. Christina has tirelessly offered her best advice, guidance, and listening ear to us for months as we navigated the ups-and-downs of starting our business. She has celebrated our wins with us and provided us with reassurance and motivation when we faced challenges. Her advice is always wise, selfless, and trustworthy. Beyond her advice, one of the most valuable things Christina has provided us is access to her network and connections…. these connections have led to incredible relationships and the advancement of our business.”
Maine Coast Creamery is now fully operational, offering high-quality, custard-based ice cream made from pure ingredients in small batches. Their ice cream is crafted entirely from scratch, without using pre-made dairy mixes.
The future looks bright for these dedicated business owners. Molly and Ismael are excited to continue to express their creativity through the ice cream-making process, to offer their tantalizing artisan flavors more people, and to scale their business at a sustainable pace. More than just a business, Maine Coast Creamery is a labor of love. Ismael and Molly’s transition from hobbyists to business owners reflects their long-time passion for ice cream and the strength of community support.
