It’s a well-known truth that the most successful businesses solve real-world problems. That is exactly what Dr. Jason Hine, Emergency Medicine Physician in Maine set out to do by forming his company, SimKit.
Unlike specialists, emergency physicians must be prepared to perform a wide range of procedures, often at a moment’s notice and under pressure. Some of these procedures are complex and rarely performed, which can lead to “skill decay.”
Having firsthand experience with this challenge, Dr. Hine realized that many of his colleagues faced the same issue. While continuing medical education is mandatory, there wasn’t a convenient way for doctors to regularly practice rare and life-saving procedures independently.
To address this need, Dr. Hine founded SimKit, an innovative platform offering procedural videos, point-of-care infographics, and instructional pages. Subscribers are also mailed monthly kits with materials for hands-on practice.
To help him launch the business he teamed up with Sue Rose, an expert in medical education who now acts as Chief Operating Officer for SimKit. Along the way, the two sought guidance from the Maine SBDC, the Maine Center for Entrepreneurs, and multiple industry experts. They also received funding from the Maine Technology Institute (MTI).
In 2021, Dr. Hine was paired with Maine SBDC Business Advisor Tina Oddleifson. Over the last several years she has provided guidance on market research, business planning, financial projections, funding, bookkeeping, and marketing. “Tina has been an invaluable resource for us. Her knowledge, guidance, and patience have greatly impacted our business planning and acumen. We wouldn’t be where we are without her and the Maine SBDC!”
“Working with Jason and Sue has been a rewarding experience for me as well,” says Tina. “They’ve tackled complex challenges, from national medical education accreditation to manufacturing, curriculum development, fundraising, and market strategy, all while balancing other full-time jobs and family life.”
After almost four years of hard work, SimKit is finding success in the marketplace. The business has been steadily growing its subscription base with individual doctors and is establishing contracts with regional hospitals and medical practices in the US and beyond.
