In 2019, Jodie Curtis opened Yarrow, a retail shop that invites customers to be curious and explorative about what wellness can look like! Jodie has a background in retail, with experience in wholesale, product development, and marketing, which helped her understand the complexities of owning a retail business. But for her, the creative freedom of being her own boss has been worth the challenges!
Jodie and Maine SBDC at the University of Southern Maine Certified Business Advisor Anne Lancaster connected in early 2020 to discuss proactive approaches to the future. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit a few months later, Anne shared available resources with Jodie. They stayed in touch periodically over the next few years and then reconnected after bumping into each other at the New England Made Show. Jodie was looking for guidance and feedback from a mentor who was familiar with the territory. Anne was able to provide information about funding opportunities, business plan updates, and wholesale. They also began working with Marketing Specialists Kathy Fisher and Jenny Green of Fisher Green Creative to discuss her website, ecommerce, social media, and SEO.
Along the way, Anne shared the CDBG Microenterprise Grant from the Southern Maine Planning & Development Commission with Jodie. This led to her being awarded a grant which has been a wonderful opportunity for her to renovate the space, hire a new employee, add new technology, and ultimately grow the business!
Jodie commented on working with the Maine SBDC “DO IT! I have already shared with several small business friends the value of connecting with an organization like [the Maine] SBDC. Having someone to run by your thoughts, plans, fears, and success is so valuable – it is like having a trusted partner.”
